This Spanish language academy is designed to help current tree climbers meet the pre-requisite qualifications needed for the ISA Certified Tree Climber Specialist exam and gain further understanding about technical tree climbing . Each course is designed to meet one of the qualification needs. The last course of the academy is an exam day where current ISA tree climber examiners will asses testers following the ISA practicum guidelines.

The ISA Certified Tree Climber program is the only global, industry-wide climber certification to test knowledge and skills against internationally accepted standards related to skill and safe work practices. As an integral part of a career journey, being an ISA Certified Tree Climber allows you to show your competencies as a professional climber and ignites a continued passion for learning and development in this industry. To be eligible for the exam, you must have the following:

Eighteen months of climbing experience in arboriculture
Current training in a physical (practice) aerial rescue, CPR, and First Aid

Improper pruning is one of the most common—and preventable—issues affecting tree health and structure. While the ANSI A300 Pruning Standard provides a framework for tree care, vague or incomplete pruning specifications often leave too much interpretation to the production arborist, leading to practices such as lion-tailing, excessive thinning, and topping.

This webinar explores how unclear pruning prescriptions contribute to poor outcomes and how arborists can improve results through more precise, objective-based pruning specifications. Participants will learn how to translate client concerns and tree conditions into clear instructions that align the prescriber, the production arborist, and the tree owner.

The session will also introduce key concepts from the Prescription Pruning Qualification (PPQ) program, including how measurable pruning instructions—such as cut number, size, type, and location—can improve communication, reduce liability, and produce more consistent tree care outcomes.

About the Speakers:

Dr. Ignazio Graziosi is an Assistant Outreach Professor of Tree Biology, Structure, and Health with the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. He/She is deeply interested in tree health and in raising awareness of the many benefits trees provide. His/Her work focuses on urban forestry, arboriculture, forest entomology, and public engagement related to urban and community tree canopies.

He holds a Ph.D. in Forest Entomology from the University of Kentucky and an M.S. in Forestry and Environmental Sciences from the University of Florence in his home country of Italy.

Prior to joining the University of Georgia, he worked with non-governmental and governmental organizations, universities, and private companies. His experience includes coordinating urban forest outreach in Kentucky; conducting surveillance of quarantine plant pests in the European Union; studying the ecology of mosquito vectors in Europe and Africa; developing tree health protocols in Africa; researching the ecology and control of tree pests and pathogens in the United States and Europe (including emerald ash borer, Asian chestnut gall wasp, and chestnut blight); contributing to the biological control of cassava pests in Asia; and working as an urban forester and arborist assistant in Italy.

Dr. Stephanie Adams is a tree pathologist and an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist (BCMA) with 24 years of experience in the green industry. She has extensive field and lab expertise working with trees and landscape plants. Dr. Adams holds a B.S. in Botany with a minor in Urban Forestry from Western Illinois University, an M.S. in Plant Pathology from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. in Forest Tree Pathology from the University of Florida’s School of Forestry. She has been an ISA Certified Arborist since 2007 and earned the BCMA credential in 2017.

Previously the plant health care leader at the Morton Arboretum, she now is Assistant Professor and Extension Tree and Landscape Plant Health Specialist at Texas A&M University.

Juan Carrasco is the Director of Plant Health Care and Sales Manager at Atlanta Arbor, bringing over 30 years of experience in Arboriculture and Plant Health Care across California, Florida, and Georgia. He holds a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Panamerican University of Agriculture “El Zamorano” and has been an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist since 2007. Juan is also ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) and a licensed Pesticide Applicator in Georgia. With extensive experience managing commercial, institutional, governmental, and residential projects, Juan delivers practical, science-based solutions that provide exceptional value to clients. Drawing on decades of field and leadership experience, he has successfully guided arborist sales teams and businesses toward sustainable growth through integrated, results-driven strategies. He has served as an instructor for the UF/IFAS Extension in Florida and continues to lead training seminars with the Georgia Arborist Association and other industry organizations. Juan has also been invited to speak in his home country of Ecuador, where he shares his expertise in tree risk assessment and proper arboricultural practices with municipalities and public and private organizations.

JB Toorish started his career in the green industry in 1980 working for a landscaping company in the Cleveland, Ohio area. JB started as a lawn technician and eventually managed the lawn care and tree/ornamental care departments while developing Integrated Pest Management programs. In 1995, JB began working for the Davey Tree Expert Company as a sales and service technician. He graduated from The Davey Institute of Horticultural Sciences and The Davey Institute of Tree Sciences in 1997.

In July of 1997, JB started with LESCO/JDL as Manager of Technical Services. There, JB’s duties included daily agronomic and pest control support to internal and external customers. He held pesticide dealer/applicator licenses in over 30 states and routinely performed educational training presentations for CEU credits.

JB joined the Arborjet team in April of 2009. He is currently living in Orlando, Florida and providing sales and technical support for the southeast region of the United States.

JB has created and facilitated chemical applicator re-certification training presentations for many states throughout the US. JB has also written technical information for various industry text books, internal newsletters, websites and a monthly technical column for Lawn and Landscape Magazine.

Alex Ferguson is a certified arborist, TRAQ qualified, and the owner of Arbor Kí Tree Solutions, which provides PHC support services to companies within the tree care industry. Alex began his career in his early teens, working for retirees and master gardeners, which developed his interest in the green industry. After completing his degree in Horticulture from the University of Georgia, he pursued further education in the industry, focusing on arboriculture. Since discovering PHC, he has been committed to fostering a positive public view and promoting the adoption of preventative tree care.

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) will implement important updates to the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (ISA TRAQ) program effective 5 November 2025. Changes include updates to the educational materials and program as well as examinations as a response to the most recent Job Task Analysis and Standard Setting performed for the program.

These updates and programmatic changes are also done based on international standards for this type of training and development program. It ensures the credential remains current, reliable, and aligned with industry standards. Read the full press release here.

The TRAQ course and credential provide an opportunity for professionals in the arboriculture industry to expand their knowledge through education and training in the fundamentals of tree risk assessment. This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardized and systematic process for assessing tree risk. The results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Earning the qualification requires attendance at a 2-day educational course followed by a ½-day assessment that includes both a written and field exams. The first two days are typically 8am-5pm and the third day (exam day) is 8am-noon. It is required that you attend the entire course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive this qualification. Coffee and a light breakfast are typically included each day along with lunch the first two days. If overnight travel is needed you will need to make hotel reservations on your own.

The course includes Tree Biology and Mechanics, Tree Inspection and Assessment, Data Analysis and Risk Categorization, and Risk Reporting. The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) Course prepares the participant to take the TRAQ assessment to become ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. Once registered, you will receive a Course Workbook that you can read and study to prepare for the course. The course manual is no longer included in the materials shipped to you. It can be purchased ahead of the course at a discount on the ISA webstore if you have already registered for the course (available after October 20th). It is strongly suggested that you read the materials prior to the course. Not all of the materials on the exams will be covered in detail in the classroom. The Manual and Workbook are essential parts of the learning process for this course.

Jimmy Walters: Certified Arborist since 1996. SC Registered Forester. 1971 graduate of Clemson University, BS Forestry. Retired with over 40 years service with SC Forestry Commission. Retired as Program Coordinator for Urban and Community Forestry in SC. Charter member of SC Urban and Community Forestry Council (now Trees SC). Board of Directors, SC Vegetation Management Association, active in the SC Green Industry Association. Past President, Southern Chapter ISA and member of Florida Chapter as well. Now operating an arboricultural consulting firm, Urban Forest Advisors, LLC. Skilled teacher and public speaker. Many classes and lectures on Hazard Tree Management (old terminology) and Tree Risk Assessment prior to TRAQ.

Sharon Lilly:

Sharon Lilly, an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist®, spent 25 years in commercial arboriculture including climbing, managing, and consulting. She also served for 19 years as director of educational goods and services at ISA. She is a Past President of ISA and she developed and taught arboriculture class at Columbus State University. Sharon led the initial development of ISA’s Arborist Certification program, led the development of the ISA TRAQ program, co-authored the Tree Risk Assessment Manual and Best Management Practices (BMP) published by ISA. She is an author of the Arborists’ Certification Study Guide and many other books, BMPs, workbooks, articles, and brochures. Sharon also developed many video training programs, and online courses.

Strengthening the Interface Between Arboriculture and Landscape Architecture

Tension between landscape architects and arborists is a common challenge, often arising from the intersection of aesthetic design and site programming priorities with the realities of tree biology, long-term health, and risk management. Too often, arborists are not engaged during the design phase of a project and are instead limited to roles focused on existing tree inventories, mitigation requirements, or the maintenance of newly installed plantings.

How can landscape architects and arborists collaborate more effectively at the outset of a project to ensure that appropriate tree species are selected and sited correctly? What key considerations should arborists communicate to landscape architects early in the process, and what information should landscape architects share in return? Finally, how can both professions work together to better educate clients on the value of early, integrated collaboration?

Meet the Speaker-

Kris May is a Licensed Landscape Architect based in Indianapolis, Indiana. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and Native American Studies and began his career in the early 2000s working with the Juvenile Justice Department. He later owned an art gallery and served as manager of the Garfield Park Arts Center for Indy Parks & Recreation before returning to academia to earn a Master of Landscape Architecture.

While his professional practice is grounded in design, Kris is deeply committed to creating spaces that are ecologically responsible and environmentally sustainable. He has participated in the Tour des Trees, a benefit cycling event supporting the TREE Fund, and currently serves as the TREE Fund Liaison for the Indiana Arborists Association. Through this role, he has developed strong relationships with arborists and continues to advocate for increased collaboration between the two professions to promote healthier urban canopies and more resilient landscapes.

Over two full day sessions, experienced instructors and certified arborists Rob Swanson and Kay Evanovich will help attendees prepare for the exam with talks covering Tree Biology, Tree Identification, Soil Science, Water Management, Tree Nutrition and Fertilization, Tree Selection, Installation and Establishment, Pruning, Tree Support and Lightning Protection, Diagnosis and Plant Disorders, Plant Health Care, Tree Assessment and Risk Management, Trees and Construction, Urban Forestry, Tree Worker Safety, and Climbing & Working in Trees. Attendees will also learn about eligibility for the exam and taking the exam.

Attendees should combine this class with the study of the ISA Certified Arborists' Study Guide (not included in course registration). The GAA has a limited number of copies available in exchange for a donation to the GAA. You can make your donation here.

Attendees are responsible for completing their own application for the exam through the ISA. This is a 2 step process which begins with an application, and once approved by the ISA you can register for the exam date and location of your choice. Exam fees are handled by ISA and are not included in registration for this course. You can find a copy of the ISA Certified Arborist Application Guide HERE. If you have any questions about the process, the GAA is happy to help!

Scholarships are available to tree board members and tree care workers employed by a city, county, school or university or non-profit who are not already ISA Certified Arborists. Scholarships are sponsored by the Georgia Forestry Commission. Applicants must be employed within the State of Georgia. Scholarship covers the $150 cost of the course, but does not include free membership. You may apply for scholarship here. If applying for scholarship please be sure to register to hold your spot - instead of paying just choose "invoice me". Scholarship application deadline is May 10,2025.

Why EHAP?

EHAP will augment your work in three areas:

OSHA Safety Requirements

EHAP helps you meet the OSHA 1910.269 safety standard, which requires:

Employer-certified training
Employers must certify that employees who work 10 feet or closer to energized conductors are trained in the special hazards involved in such work.
On-the-job training and verification
Employers must verify through documented, on-the-job training and verification that these employees have the skills necessary to perform line-clearance job tasks safely.

EHAP must be used in combination with documented on-the-job skills training and verification to meet OSHA 1910.269 requirements.

ANSI Safety Requirements
The ANSI Z133.1 safety standard for arboricultural operations requires all employees be trained to recognize electrical hazards. EHAP training meets the ANSI Z133.1 training requirement. All the content related to electrical hazards in the Z133 is included in the EHAP course.) The ANSI Z 133 Safety Standard is available for purchase separately.

Storm Cleanup
EHAP is often required by the US Army Corps of Engineers in order to qualify for storm-related clean-ups. They have recognized the importance of the EHAP training program dating back to Hurricane Katrina.

This course includes a full-day, in person training with a qualified instructor AND a virtual self-paced instruction. Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

When a tree worker is injured or incapacitated aloft, typically fellow crew members are the first to respond an emergency could develop any time, and tree care professionals must know how to react.

TCIA’s Aerial Rescue Training Program helps you protect your workers and meet the aerial rescue training requirements mandated by ANSI Z133.1 and OSHA.

Prepare for your Certified Tree Worker Exam with Aerial Rescue Training. Provided at a discounted rate in partnership with the TCIA's Arborist Safety Training Institute (ASTI).

This course includes a full-day, in person training with a qualified instructor AND a virtual self-paced instruction. Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Climbers must bring own gear, wear all necessary PPE and be able to access the tree and ascend/descend without assistance.
