Branching Out: Tree Identification & The Oaks of Georgia Tree identification can be challenging and takes practice, but understanding the morphological characteristics to look for makes all the difference. Ms. Campbell will begin by sharing practical tips and clues to look for when identifying trees in the growing season, including the key features arborists use to confidently identify species in the field. She will then apply those principles to one of Georgia's most diverse—and notoriously difficult to identify—groups of trees: oaks. From leaf variations to distinctive bark and acorns to preferred habitat and soil drainage, you'll learn the clues that make oak identification both easier and more interesting.

Whether you're a new arborist, a seasoned tree care professional looking to sharpen your skills, or simply someone with an interest in Georgia's forests, this session will provide the knowledge and confidence needed to field-identify oaks and trees in general. The webinar will also help you appreciate the remarkable diversity and complexity of one of Georgia's most iconic tree groups.

About the Speaker:

Holly Campbell is a Public Service Associate with the University of Georgia (UGA) Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, where she focuses on dendrology, urban forestry, foraging, and wildland fire community education and academic instruction. Ms. Campbell is the Georgia Master Naturalist Coordinator, an ISA Certified Arborist (GO-139A), and is part of the faculty team for the Warnell degree program in Community Forestry and Arboriculture. Prior to Warnell, Ms. Campbell worked for the office of the Southern Regional Extension Forester for five years, focusing on regional and national urban forestry and wildland fire Cooperative Extension projects and, earlier in her career, she worked as a landscape gardener for 12 years. Ms. Campbell holds a BSA in horticulture and an MS in forest resources with a focus on forest soils focus, both from UGA. Lastly, she is an avid gardener, cook, and nature lover.
